Chatham-Kent has a strong cultural history with Harpers Ferry. Abolitionist John Brown held many meetings in Chatham. Included in these meetings were his plans to seize the arsenal held at Harpers Ferry. Of the men that joined him in his raid, one from Chatham, Osborne Perry Anderson. Anderson was one of only 5 to escape the attack. Many people believe that Brown’s attack on Harpers Ferry was the onset to the American Civil War.
